The U.S. Needs Nearly Four Million Homes to Meet Demand

Up for Growth recently released its 2024 Housing Underproduction in the US Report, which found that although the gap between supply and demand improved slightly, the nation is still short by 3.85 million housing units. Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and Utah are among the states that have made progress on addressing housing gaps, while housing shortages have gotten worse in Montana and Colorado. The report highlights a handful of market case studies, including the Wasatch Front in Utah. According to Up for Growth, the Salt Lake City metro’s progress on reducing its housing deficit is a result of policies identified in the Wasatch Choice 2040 Plan, which prioritizes TOD and infrastructure investment. In 2023, LCG worked on the Utah Parking Modernization Guidebook, which offers strategies for reducing parking minimums to encourage new development.
